With the Lunar II coin series, the Perth Mint has been continuing the success of its predecessor, Lunar I, since 2008. Up until 2019, a total of twelve zodiac signs from the Chinese moon calendar, the so-called lunar calendar, can be seen in alternation on the motif side of the coins along with the name of the edition. The gold coins are made of high-quality 999.9 fine gold in eight different denominations from 1/20 oz up to 1 kg. In addition to the respective gold editions, a silver coin is issued each year with the same title but not with the same motif.
As is also the case in Western astrology, in Chinese Buddhist culture each zodiac sign is associated with certain properties that influence the fate of humans. Unlike European astrology, however, the period for which each zodiac sign of the lunar calendar applies is twelve months, so that an animal influences fate for an entire year and also gives its name to the year. According to the lunar calendar, the year of the monkey begins in 2016 and and so it is this monkey that is found on the motif side of the coins in the current Lunar II series for this year of issue.
The motif side shows a single monkey sitting on the thick branch of a peach tree. In the foliage to his right, a single peach can be seen, which the monkey appears to have fixed his gaze upon. Below the fruit, the Chinese characters for "monkey" can be seen, while under the image the inscription "YEAR OF THE MONKEY" can be read. The motif was designed by the young artist Ing Ing Jong, whose initials are to be found on the trunk the tree to the right of the image.
The nominal side traditionally shows a portrait of the British Queen Elizabeth II, who is Head of the Commonwealth and the official Head of State for Australia. The image which shows the queen in profile wearing a diamond tiara was designed by the British artist Ian Rank-Broadley and was first revealed on British coins in 1998. An inscription states the name of the Queen "ELIZABETH II", the country of issue "AUSTRALIA" as well as the material of the coin "Gold", the fine content "999.9" and the nominal value of "5 DOLLAR".
