The South African Krugerrand pioneered the bullion investment market that we know today and is still held in high regard by investors and collectors. The 1/10oz version makes these valuable coins even more accessible to a wider global market and have a high liquidity rate. The 22 karat gold coins offer premium investments and are made to precise specifications that ensure security for investors.
As an investment option, the 2014 1/10oz Gold Krugerrand has brilliant features that tick all the right boxes, namely liquidity, portability and globally acknowledged quality. As a miniature coin minted in small numbers, it is an integral part of any extensive collection. Given the fact that Krugerrands are the world's first and most famous bullion coins, this little beauty also makes a perfect gift.
Produced by the Rand Refinery in South Africa, the 2014 1/10oz Krugerrand is 16.55 in diameter and 1.35 mm thick; it weighs 3.393g and retains the 916.7/1000 crown gold alloy purity.
The obverse side of the coin is detailed with a profiled bust of President Paul Kruger, a well-known Boer leader, statesman and local hero who went on to become the last President of the Republic of South Africa. It features the name of the country and the gold contents in the two South African native languages - English and Afrikaans. The reverse side of the coin depicts the image of a galloping springbok antelope, one of the national symbols of South Africa. This side also features the mintage year as well as the gold content of the coin.
The history of the Krugerrand doesn't begin at the South African Mint - it doesn't even begin with the Rand Refinery which stamps out its blanks. The Kruger's history starts with a gold rush. During the 1970s and 1980s some Western countries forbade import of the Krugerrand because of its association with the apartheid government of South Africa. In 1980, and in an effort toregain its position in the market, the pioneering mint introduced smaller denominations, amongst them the 1/10oz ounce fractional, or miniature Krugerrands. That same year the mint stamped out 3,143,000 of the full size Krugers, with 12,000 proofs.
CoinInvest GmbH only buy Krugerrand coins that have been manufactured by the South African Mint. Counterfeiting 2014 1/10oz Krugerrands is indeed next to impossible, thanks to their small size. The substitute metals that would allow a fake coin to be the same size and weight of the real thing are uranium, plutonium and tungsten. Considering cost and danger, only tungsten meets the criteria of the perfect substitute, as it is cheap and weighs almost the same as gold. The difference is that it is very brittle, so it cannot be stamped to create the desired detail. Any perfect fake would require a thick gold-plated surface to be stamped. This would allow for the fine detail of the image to be exactly like a real coin, but would leave minimum (if any) profit for the forger.
Besides, Krugerrand quality is almost impossible to copy. It is the quality of the material, the artistry of the manufacturing, and the exact specifications of the coin (always available on the SA Mint site) that make a genuine Krugerrand stand out from any fake. But for many experts it is its distinctive yellow-orange colour coming from the copper in the alloy that really makes it delightfully unique.
