Little John 2022 1 oz Gold Coin
Celebrating the tale of Robin Hood dated from the 13th century, the Myths and Legends Collection from the Royal Mint was launched in 2021. On the first two coins in the collection, the archer himself and Maid Marian were represented.
This third coin now available on StoneX Bullion depicts Little John, the reliable and faithful companion of Robin Hood.
On the reverse, Little John who despite his name was thought to have been a giant man is presented like a warrior. He stands proudly and boldly in the middle of the design holding his staff and looking towards the horizon. He is in the Sherwood Forest surrounded by beautiful and strong trees. Hood's accomplices, the 'Merry Men' included Little John, Will Scarlett, Friar Tuck, Much and Maid Marian. They were said to have lived together in Sherwood Forest, near Nottingham, hence the representation of the woods here.
The design is the work of head designer Jody Clark who was the youngest designer to have created a definitive coinage portrait of Her Majesty The Queen. He is in a rare position now that his designs can be found on both sides of new coins like on this Little John 1 oz 2022 version.
On the obverse of the coin, The Queen is represented wearing the George IV State Diadem Crown. The inscription above her head “Elizabeth2, D.G, REG F.D are the initials for a Latin phrase which translates to “By the grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith followed by 100 POUNDS, the face value.
