The original gold bullion coin, The Krugerrand was first issued by the South African Mint and the Rand Refinery back in 1967. The beautifully designed coin enjoyed immediate success. However, the 1oz Krugerrand retained an air of exclusivity that saw it account for more than 90% of the world’s lucrative coin market by 1980.
Despite sanctions during the 1980s and 90s, the 1oz Gold Krugerrand set the standard for bullion coins. Like its predecessors, the 2021 Gold 1oz Krugerrand continues to sport the elegant obverse and reverse design features that have served it well for over 50 years. Its distinctive reddish hue is thanks to the addition of copper to one troy ounce of .9167 (22 carat) gold. This alloy is also used for British Gold Sovereigns and is historically known as ‘crown gold’.
