Why was the Krugerrand produced?
The gold Krugerrand was initially released in 1967 by the Rand Refinery in South Africa to help promote South African gold to international markets and to make it possible for individuals to own gold.

The reverse of the coin features the traditional springbok antelope. This particular design was created in 1947 by Coert Steynberg, a renowned South African sculptor who worked in stone marble, copper and wood.
Over the years, the Springbok has become the national animal and emblem of South African. At some point, it represented the values and characteristics of the Afrikaner people during the apartheid. Quite rightly, the ANC in power and Black South African people decided to change it to the protea, the country’s national flower.
However, Nelson Mandela had other ideas in mind. He understood that Afrikaners wanted to keep their treasured emblem and he used it as a means to an end: bringing the nation together. During the 1995 World Cup Finals against New Zealand, he appeared in the stadium wearing the Springbok green and gold jersey and the Afrikaner crowd shouted “Nelson Nelson Nelson”. Since then, nobody has ever questioned the Springboks as the symbol of South Africa. The reverse also features the word “Krugerrand”’, the year of mintage is written on the left and right of the springbok and at the bottom are the purity and the coin’s weight.
The obverse of the coin consistently features an image of Paul Kruger who was president of South Africa at the end of the 19th century.Even though academic opinion on Kruger is divided, he was accorded a state funeral in Pretoria on 16th december 1904. He is now buried in what is called the Heroes Acre in the Church street Cemetery. And his head is now on the famous Krugerrand coin!
At the top of the coin the words 'South Africa' are written in English and in Afrikaans.
Because of its popularity and tradability
Produced by the Rand Refinery, it is the world’s oldest minted bullion coin making it a very desirable product. So far, more than 46 million ounces of fine gold contained in the minted Krugerrands have been sold worldwide which means that more Krugerrands are in circulation internationally than all other gold coins combined.
Each ½ oz gold coin contains 15.55 grams of fine gold which translates to 22ct gold.
