As always, a map of Africa is to the right with the words 'AFRICAN OUNCE' on the left edge and the coin's year of issue, its weight and purity to the right. The obverse shows the Rwanda coat of arms with an inscription in Kinyarwanda, one of the country's native languages, along with the coin's denomination of 50 Rwandan Francs.
