First introduced in 1986, the American Eagle Silver 1oz is one of the most popular coins in the United States and is also one of the most sought-after silver coins internationally.
Adolph A. Weinman, a German-born American sculptor, produced the iconic design for the coin's obverse ('walking liberty half dollar'). The coin appears in 2021 in a revised form as it was the 35th anniversary of the American silver eagle coin. It was decided that for this occasion, the original design would have a new motif on the reverse. Thus, the old and the new designs blend to create this new edition.
On the obverse of the coin is depicted Adolph A. Weinmann's Lady Liberty from 1986. Represented as a goddess in a beautiful, flowing dress, Lady Liberty walks towards the sun in the lower left corner of the coin. It seems to illuminate the path to freedom and guide the protagonist as she reaches out toward it. In her other arm, she holds an olive branch which is synonymous of strength and peace. Behind her floats the American flag which seems to envelop her. It is important to note three distinct writings on this coin. Firstly, the word 'liberty' crowns the coin with a sparse calligraphy. There is also the expression "in god we trust" to the right of the figure, which refers to the American motto. Finally, on the bottom of the obverse is the year in which the coin was minted. On the new edition can be found a W below the American motto, which is a tribute to Weinman.
On the reverse of the coin is the iconic American bird, the bald eagle, designed for the 2021 version by Emily Damstra, author of zoological, botanical, anthropological, and other illustrations for the Royal Canadian Mint. The animal appears to be in its natural element and is landing on an oak branch, its wings still spread. It is majestic and is also a reference to the notion of strength and prestige. Here feature inscriptions such as "united states of America" and "one dollar" to the left and below the eagle respectively. The Latin phrase "e Pluribus Unum" is another American motto, literally meaning "one from many". If there is a letter on the reverse, between the eagle and the Latin phrase, it is an indication of where the coin was forged. An 'S' would mean that the coin was minted in San Francisco, a 'P' in the US mint's Philadelphia branch, and a 'W' in West Point.
