Originally named the Gold Nugget series with a gold nugget displayed on the reverse of the coin, in 1990 it was renamed the Kangaroo Gold series and now features a yearly changing motif of a kangaroo. The kangaroo is internationally recognised as a symbol of Australia and coupled with an image of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse, the coin pays homage to Australia’s history with Britain.
