Design of Superman Coins

The Royal Canadian Mint teamed up with copyright owners of the Superman character DC Comics and were given special compensation to become official licensees of the emblematic figure. Superman appear in full colour on the reverse of the coins, watching over his adopted city of Metropolis in full blue and white uniform, his red cape billowing in the wind. In the bottom right curve of the image, next to the superheroes outstretched foot is the sign of the Daily Planet, the fictional newspaper Clark Kent worked for. Also on the reverse side is the value of $20, together with the country of origin along the top rim and the year of production along the bottom rim. The other symbols that appear around the rim is original Kryptonian language taken from the comic which says “75 years of Superman."

The obverse side of the coin features the crownless portrait of Queen Elizabeth II created by Susanna Blunt in 2003. The words “Elizabeth II" and “D G Regina flank either side of her majesty's bust." The coins are struck in 99.99% pure silver and have a diameter measuring 38mm.

History of Superman Coins

The Royal Canadian Mint has produced silver bullion coins since 1911 and established itself as a world leader in precious metal engineering with the production of the its ground breaking gold Maple Leaf in 1979. It is fitting that the RCM were chosen to commemorate a milestone occasion for Superman as Joseph-Shuster, the co-creator of the original comic character was born and raised in Toronto. The fictional city of Metropolis is based on Toronto and the Daily Planet was based on the Toronto Daily Star, the paper Shuster delivered papers for until his family moved to Cleveland Ohio when he was ten years old. However, the Man of Steel was the subtitle used for editions of the comic between 1993 and 2004 after Shuster had finished contributing the artwork due to bad health. He dies in 1996. The picture used for the 2013 Man Of Steel silver coin was featured on the cover of April 2004 edition.
