Meet Germania

The new Germania Mint takes its name from the Latin term for Germany, from which the English word 'Germany' stemmed. Although never used to refer to modern Deutschland, in ancient times the region to the north of the Danube and east of the Rhine was known as Germania. During that period, the personification of Germania first appeared on coins and frescos. Depicted as a brave, warrior-like woman, Germania was portrayed as the nation's guardian.

The 2019 1 oz Germania 5 Mark coin

This superbly crafted 1 oz round is struck from .9999 pure silver and finished to the highest standards. Its obverse presents Germania in all her glory against an exquisite guilloche-type background. Her long, flowing locks are topped by a crown of laurel and her cloak and gown appear to blow in the breeze. She is appropriately armed with an imperial sword or Reichsschwert and a large shield emblazoned with the famous two-headed eagle that is an enduring and widely recognised symbol of Germany. The rim of the coin is slightly etched and features the word 'GERMANIA' along with the coin's weight, year of issue and fineness.

The reverse shows the famous two-headed eagle that is often used as a symbol of Germany. In mythology, the two-headed eagle motif is associated with the Roman god Janus, a guardian of doors and gateways and a patron of alliances and partnerships. The heads face east and west, denoting the past and future while the lightning bolts grasped in the bird's claws represent its divine attributes such as power over creation and destruction and immense strength.

Why choose the 2019 1 oz Germania 5 Mark coin?

Because its denomination is in marks and because it has no legal tender status, this impressive piece is technically a round. However, it's already become one of the year's most talked about issues; it's the first release from the brand new Germania Mint, only 25,000 will be minted and, of course, it's exceptionally pure at 999.9/1000. The ideal choice for avid collectors and discerning investors, the 2019 1 oz Germania silver 5 Mark coin can be ordered now at StoneX Bullion.com.
