Queues formed outside the Munich branch of the Federal Bank for this unique Tropical Zone 5 Euro coin on the first day of issue. The eagerly awaited 2017 coin is set to echo the success of the 2106 5 Euro Planet Earth coin. The Planet Earth coin featured a blue polymer ring between a central and outer portion of metal. The inner section of the coin’s obverse shows a tropical parrot in flight above rainforest treetops. A ‘fish-eye’ style has been used to illustrate the height of these great trees and the parrot approaches with his claws extended and wings high as if he is about to land. Two small birds can be seen circling the edges of the treetops, as if in the distance.
The outer ring shows another four smaller birds and the design is superbly brought together by a dazzling red polymer ring that might well denote the heat of the tropics. An inscription reading TROPISCHE ZONE sits at the lower left of the outer Cupronickel ring. The reverse of the coin features the heraldic eagle that is a symbol of Germany in the centre with the mintmark of the manufacturing mint over its head.
