The Red Dragon of Wales, now in pure platinum

Both the obverse and reverse were designed by artist Jody Clark. The eagerly anticipated reverse design certainly doesn't disappoint. Like previous coins in this fine collection, the reverse of 2018's Red Dragon of Wales is inspired by the golden statues of the mythical beasts of the monarchy that stood watch as Her Majesty was crowned Queen at Westminster Abbey. The famous statues were created by Sir James Woodford OBE and they are linked to some of the greatest houses in the British Isles. The originals can be seen in the Canadian Museum of History.
The Red Dragon of Wales was the heraldic badge chosen by Owen Tudor and references Llewelyn the Last's fabled battle with the dragon. Tudor's grandson, Henry VII adopted the Red Dragon as a symbol of his descent from the ancient King of Gwynedd, Cadwaladr (AD 655 to 682) although there is no firm historical evidence to back his claim. Often referred to as the Red Dragon of Cadwaladr, Jody Clark has created a superb reverse design featuring the legendary beast with a shield showing the coat of arms of Llewelyn App Gruffud, the last Welsh-born Prince of Wales.
