The Perth Mint launched its Gold Nugget collection in 1986. The term 'nugget' references the country's historic outback gold mining industry and the original reverse design (from 1986 to 1989) featured various depictions of gold nuggets. The 1989 proof Gold Nugget was the first to feature the kangaroo, an Australian icon that's recognised around the globe, and by 1990 the Gold Kangaroo had replaced the nugget.
