The American Gold Buffalo

The Gold American Buffalo, colloquially known as the Buffalo, is one of the most beautiful coins issued each year by the United States Mint in West Point, New York. The coin's design is based on the Indian Head Nickel, but it takes its name from the American Bison depicted on its reverse. When the Gold Buffalo made its debut in 2006, it was the United States Mint's first ever 24-carat coin. Although the Buffalo is legal tender with a face value of $50, its true value is significantly higher thanks in part to the coin's popularity and the increase in gold prices over the years.

The reverse of the 2018 1oz Gold Buffalo shows the mighty American Bison standing on a grassy knoll. The image is a modified version of the design created by noted sculptor James Earle Fraser for the Indian Head Nickel (1913 to 1938). The obverse carries the famous Indian Head design, also by James Earle Fraser. The portrait is a combination of the features of three Indian chiefs who sat for him, Big Tree, Iron Tail, and Two Moons.
