1 oz Wiener Neustadt 825th Anniversary Silver Coin (2019)

This brilliant three-coin series from the Austrian Mint beautifully illustrates the founding of the Vienna Mint. These new coins commemorate the 825thanniversary of the Mint. Wiener Neustadt literally means “New Vienna” and was built for the sole purpose to defend south-eastern Austria from the Kingdom of Hungary during the 12 century. In 1194, the town was founded by Duke Leopold V and he financed the construction of a fortress (Burg Wiener Neustadt) with the ransom of 15 tonnes of silver paid by the English king Richard the Lionheart, who he had previously held hostage at Durnstein Castle.

Highlights:

  • Face value of 1.50(Euro) backed by the government of Austria
  • Mintage of 100,000 coins
  • Obverse features the image of an Austrian crusader of Duke Leopold V.
  • Reverse depicts the original Burg Wiener Neustadt, the first castle in Wiener Neustadt built in 1194.
