Two-Coin Set of 1 oz Tudor Beasts The Bull of Clarence Silver Coin | Proof | 2023

StoneX Bullion in collaboration with the Royal Mint is really pleased to present the Royal Tudor Beasts the Bull of Clarence 2023 UK Silver proof two-coin set.

The Bull of Clarence stands guard along with nine other Tudor heraldic beasts which flank the Moat Bridge of Hampton Court Palace. King Henry VIII erected the statues not long after the War of the Roses between the House of York and the House of Lancaster. (and the birth of the Tudor dynasty). These two coins are a contemporary tribute to an enduring symbol of Tudor power: the Bull of Clarence.

It is strong and impressive and is said to be the most powerful beasts who guard Hampton Court Palace.

The Bull of CLarence has been reimagined by artist David Lawrence who created the beautiful design on the reverse. David Lawrence has been an illustrator and sculptor for more than 30 years and worked in a number of areas, including oil painting and in recent years he has found himself drawn to projects of historical significance: reconstructions, museum spaces and coin design. The design from David Lawrence depicts the bull holding a shield with the Tudor Rose. The Bull of Clarence is a mighty, formidable beast that symbolises strength, power and wealth and this is reflected in the drawing. Both 1 oz Silver Proof coins have the same designs on the reverse and on the obverse.

The obverse features the official coinage portrait of His Majesty King Charles III. Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022, her son Charles as heir to the crown became King. His portrait is the work of the artist Martin Jennings. Martin Jennings is best known for his public sculptures which include the poet John Betjeman, in St Pancras Station in London, and Philip Larkin in Hull. He used photographs to come up with the design, rather than the King sitting for a specific portrait. His Majesty had his left-profile bust elegantly designed, unlike the Queen’s effigy, which used to be of her right-profile. The tradition for British monarchs to face a different direction to their predecessor dates back to the seventeenth century. Here you will find the inscriptions: “Charles” and 'D G REX FD' ('Dei Gratia Rex Fidei Defensor' -(Charles III by Grace of God King, Defender of the Faith”), the face value 2 pounds and the year of mintage 2023.

Both coins feature the following edge inscription: ‘HAMPTON COURT PALACE ∙ ROYAL TUDOR BEASTS’ . They are struck to Proof standard, one of which features a special reverse frosted finish. They are presented in a beautiful case accompanied by a booklet created in collaboration with experts at Historic Royal Palaces on the Bull of Clarence and Henry VIII’s use of heraldry. As this is a limited edition of 500 pieces, we advise you to purchase your copy of the Bull of Clarence 2023 UK Silver Proof two-coin set as soon as possible before it is sold out.
