A new design for 2017
For 2017, the Scottsdale Mint has chosen to depict an adult Eastern Lowland Silverback Gorilla, fangs bared. Relatively shy and not naturally aggressive, a fully-grown alpha Silverback only shows his fangs and beats his chest to warn off intruders or when he feels threatened. Eastern Lowland Gorillas inhabit the Congolese forests and marshes close to the Rwandan border. The largest of the four subspecies of eastern gorilla, the eastern lowland male has a jet-black coat and, like all gorillas, his back changes to silver as he matures. Like the 2017 1oz Congo Silverback Gorilla coin, the species is rare – only around 3,800 remain in the wild.
