The obverse of the 2017 silver coin features the Santa Maria, the flagship of Christopher Columbus. The ship was one of three that set out to explore the New World in 1492, a voyage that lead to the discovery of the US and the colonisation of the Americas. A stylised compass to the right of the Santa Maria adds another dash of nautical flavour and a collection of the type of instruments used by 15th century sailors is shown above. The reverse of the coins carries the coat of arms of Rwanda and is enhanced by several inscriptions including 'National Bank of Rwanda' in Kinyarwanda, a widely spoken local language.
