The South African Krugerrand coin is one of the world's oldest gold coins issued for investments and collection. The series was launched in 1967 with gold coins only and became immediately very popular.

The obverse of the coin features a portrait of President Paul Kruger. This design has been done by Otto Schultz and was originally created in the 1890s and used on the historic South African Pound coinage. On the original design, Otto Schutlz from the Berlin Mint made a mistake by signing the design with his initials “OS” not knowing that in English it meant Bullocks or Blockheads in Afrikaans. The initials were quickly removed and are not anywhere to be seen on the coin these days.
Encircling Paul Kruger’s left-facing profile on the obverse are the inscriptions “SUID-AFRIKA” and “SOUTH AFRICA”.
On the reverse of the coin, a springbok antelope is represented leaping elegantly through the plains. The design is the work of Coert Laurens Steynberg, a renowned sculptor who worked in stone, marble, bronze, copper and wood and created this beautiful drawing of the symbolic animal.
Inscriptions include “KRUGERRAND” “2022”, as well as the purity (Fine Silver and Fynsilwer in English and Afrikaan), and weight of the coin. It also shows the face value of the coin 1R for 1 rand.
