Great Horned Owl 1oz silver coin

This $5 (CAD) Great Horned Owl 1oz silver coin is the final in the four-coin Birds of Prey series released by the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM). Renowned Canadian wildlife artist Emily Damstra, who did the design for all four coins in this series, does her finest work in this rendition. Originally released in February of 2014, the “Birds of Prey” series now comes to a close. The Great Horned Owl one-ounce silver coin is the first of its kind and the fourth in the “Birds of Prey” series. Included in the rest of the series are a Peregrine Falcon, Bald Eagle, and Red-Tailed Hawk.

Ian Bennett, then president and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint, wanted to solidify RCM’s reputation for quality coinage and capture the fascination of its customers. That led to the release of this series. RCM already is known well across the world for the limited edition coins it produces, and this is another success for them.

Why buy RCM’s 2015 Great Horned Owl coin?

The Great Horned Owl is produced with limited mintage of a million coins - most likely less will be in circulation worldwide! Buyers across the web give this coin great reviews, which means they’re eager to purchase. Priced reasonably for many investors to buy, the limited supply of this coin will sell quickly.

In fact, the coins have been so popular that the first coin in the series, the peregrine falcon, was almost sold out by the time the bald eagle coin, the second in the series, was released. With this coin, there’s high potential for numismatic value at a bullion price. However you look at it, it’s a gorgeous coin at a great price, so stock up on yours today.

Design & Packaging of the Great Horned Owl

The obverse side of the coin features a Susanna Blunt portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, standard for all Canadian mint coins. A great horned owl ready to snatch its prey adorns the reverse. Swooping down, its powerful, outstretched wings are so large they don’t fit on the coin. You also get a close-up, lifelike view of the great horned owl. Its penetrating gaze fixates on its prey. Sharp talons are drawn, ready to make the catch. If you like wildlife, this is one of those coins you’ll want to hold onto and appreciate for years to come.

When you buy Great Horned Owl 1oz silver coin, you receive:

Multiples of 25 come in an original tube from RCM, which includes its official seal on the lid

Multiples of 500 come in “Monster Boxes”

Security of Silver Great Horned Owl Coins

As the design of the coin is detailed and presize, these coins are almost impossible to fake and are therefore a good investment even if you wish to resell them.

The last in the 'Birds of Prey' series. These are higher premium than the Canadian Maple. They are the same dimensions, and have the same portrait of the Queen.

In my experience, they tend to suffer from milk spots unlike the regular Maple.

I think they are just about worth the small premium as they have a lower mintage than Maples - but still a relatively high 1,000,000 coins
