The 2016 American Silver Eagle is a very special edition, because it is the anniversary of two events which are closely connected to the coin. On the one hand, there is 1986, the year in which the first Silver Eagle came out. And one the other hand, there is 1916, when Adolph Alexander Weinmann (*1870 in Karlsruhe, †1952 in Porchester, New York) finished the draft of the Walking Liberty. Originally, Weinmann drafted the Liberty for the obverse of the Walking Liberty half dollar, which replaced the Roosevelt half dollar. It appeared to be so popular that the United States Mint decided to give the largest silver coin in its repertoire the same design.
The plans to issue a silver bullion coin are based on the plans to sell silver out of the stocks of the “Defense National Stockpile”. This stock was minted into bullion coins which even today are still produced as the American Silver Eagle.
