The reverse of the coin depicts a graceful artwork of a magical reindeer seemingly in flight, designed by Virginia Boulay, who's initials “VB" are engraved next to the reindeer's front left leg. Its nose is not red like Rudolph's but knobbly, and its head and antlers are surrounded by numerous different sized stars. The inscriptions are: "20 DOLLARS," "FINE SILVER ARGENT PUR 9999," "2012" and "CANADA."
The obverse shows Susanna Blunt's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Encircled by the inscriptions: "ELIZABETH II" and "D•G•REGINA."
The $20 Magical Reindeer commemorative coin is composed of 99.99% fine silver and weighs 7.96 grams, thus equaling about a quarter ounce of pure silver. Its diameter is 27mm and its edges are serrated.
This coin belongs to the extremely popular "Exchange $20 for $20" program started in 2011 and has been a huge success for the Royal Canadian Mint. All coins from the previous editions have been sold out often within a single month. The previous releases include the 20 Dollar Maple Leaf Commemorative Coin released in February 2011, the 20 Dollar Canoe Commemorative Coin released in October 2011, the 20 Dollar Polar Bear Commemorative Coin released in February 2012, the 20 Dollar Queen's Diamond Jubilee Commemorative Coin released in May 2012 and the Farewell to the Penny Commemorative Coin released in August 2012.
What attracts collectors' attention is the unique designs, the precious metal content of the coins, and the affordable price. As the name of the series suggests, the coins are sold at face value, but only in Canada; and sales there is limited to 3 coins per household.
