1 oz Vienna Philharmonic Gold Coin | 2022

First minted in 1989, the Vienna Philharmonic Gold coin is one of the world’s best known and most beautiful coins. It is the result of the alliance between the excellence of the Austrian Mint and the craftsmanship of the amazing artist and engraver Thomas Pesendorfer .

Each year, the design on the gold Vienna Philharmonic coin remains the same but why would you change such a beautiful piece of art?

The Gold Vienna Philharmonic is commonly referred to as the ‘Philharmonic’ or the ‘Gold Phili’ and is the Münze Österreich AG most successful product.

In November 1998, there was a change in Austrian law that permitted the issue of pure gold coins for investment purposes. So the idea came about to have a gold coin symbolising Austria. A few different themes were proposed at the time, but it’s no surprise that music was chosen, due to its strong role in the nations’ history and culture. Focus was given to Vienna and its beautiful Philharmonic Orchestra.

The reverse of the coin is an homage to the famous orchestra. It was designed as mentioned before by Thomas Pesendorfer who chose to depict eight characteristic orchestral instruments: four violins either side of a cello in the foreground and the Viennese horn, the bassoon and the harp behind. Here, the inscription in capital letters “WIENER PHILHARMONIKER” stands in a semicircle.

On the obverse of 2022 Austrian Gold Philharmonic Coins is a depiction of the pipe organ found in the Musikverein. The Musikverein is also known as the Golden Concert Hall and is the venue where the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra performs when it is in the capital city of Austria. The original organ was built by Friedrich Ladegast in 1872 and is a result of many influences from his travels around Europe. The organ has had several makeovers and renovations since and continues to look magnificent. The Words REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH are shown above the instrument with the coin’s weight “1 Unze gold”, gold purity “999.9”, denomination “100 euros”and year of mintage “2022” engraved below.

This side was also designed by the amazing Thomas Pesendorfer who has since retired from his work at the Austrian Mint but whose creations and work remain iconic and acclaimed throughout the world.

Struck in pure gold, the Vienna Philharmonic has proved to be a massive hit with investors. One way of visualising the success of the Vienna Philharmonic gold coin is to imagine that if all the coins ever sold were piled on top of each other, they would surpass the 8,850 metres of Mount Everest! Mind blowing!
