Vienna Philharmonic History
After a change in the law in 1988 in favour of issuing pure gold coins, the Austrian Mint decided to dedicate the first gold coin with a fineness of 999.9/1000 to Austrian music. It soon became clear that nothing and nobody could represent the music of the country like the most famous orchestra in Austria, the Vienna Philharmonic. Despite initial scepticism on the part of the musicians themselves and the orchestra direction, on October 10th 1989 the first edition of the Vienna Philharmonic gold coin
in the denomination of 1 ounce and with a nominal value of 100 Euro appeared. Because the coin was enthusiastically received by investors and collectors, the sales figures sky-rocketed within a very short space of time and the initial denominations 1 oz and ¼ oz were followed in subsequent years by denominations of ½ oz, 1/10 oz and 1/25 oz.
Motif of the Vienna Philharmonic
The motif on the Vienna Philharmonic investment coin remains unchanged every year. Thus, the Vienna Philharmonic 1 oz Gold 2015 is also adorned with the designs by the chief engraver of the Austrian Mint, Thomas Pesendorfer. The front shows a group of eight musical instruments, the core instruments of the Philharmonic Orchestra. The first row depicts the stringed instruments, with a cello in the middle and a violin on either side. Horn, bassoon and harp are grouped together in the background in representation of the brass, woodwind and plucked instruments. The semi-circular engraving above the motif states the name of the coin, the "Wiener Philharmoniker" (Vienna Philharmonic).
For the back, Thomas Pesendorfer created his version of the famous Vienna Music Club organ, which has been located in music club's great Golden Hall since 1872. Here, the inscription states the issuing country 'Republik Österreich" (Republic of Austria), while below the image the fine weight of "1 Unze" (1 ounce), the material "Gold" and the fineness of 999.9 are specified. The year of issue "2015" follows this information one row further down and finally the coins states the nominal value of 100 Euro.
