The Sovereign – a unique piece of British history
Birth, reincarnation, hiatus and new beginnings, the Sovereign has certainly had a chequered past. Coins named 'sovereigns' first appeared in 1489 during the reign of Henry VII. However, they were used as presentation pieces for visiting nobles rather than circulation coinage. During the 16thcentury, the first sovereigns with a face value of £1 were used but the last was struck in 1603 when James I and IV created a new coin called the Unite.
Modern gold sovereigns made their debut in 1817 and were characterised by the beautiful Pistrucci reverse design that was commissioned by William Wellesley-Pole, Master of the Mint.
