Design

Queen Elizabeth II Full Sovereign coins weigh 7.98 g of .917 purity gold, they are 22.05 mm in diameter and 1.56 mm thick. On the obverse, the new Queen Elizabeth II Sovereigns carry three main versions for the uncirculated coins of Her Majesty's effigy facing right (George V was facing left),created by notable engravers such as Raphael David Makloufor Ian –Rank Broadly and bear the inscriptions " ELIZABETH II DEI GRA REGINA FID DEF", meaning "Elizabeth II, by the Grace of God, Queen-Defender of the Faith ".The phrases or letters have been used regularly on coinage since the 16th century.
In most issues, Benedetto Pistrucci's rendition of St George slaying the evil dragon adorns the reverse side. The heroic image was inspired by the Parthenon marbles at the British Museum, and commemorates Napoleon's defeat by the British forces at Waterloo. The date of issue appears on the reverse side. New Sovereign coins have a grained milled edge on both sides.

History

The new gold Sovereigns were initially struck as commemorative coins for Queen Victoria's coronation, but in 1957 the Royal Mint continued issuing the coin, this time strictly for investors and collectors. The coins feature the new royal portrait of the young Queen, aged just 26 at her Accession, and was unveiled in the autumn of 1952. It made its debut on the circulating coinage in 1953, the year of the Queen's Coronation, but while a complete set of coins was struck for archive purposes, no gold coins were authorized for general release. The precious pattern pieces and the original dies are now housed at the Royal Mint Museum.
2002 sovereigns have a crowned shield reverse design to celebrate the Queen's Golden Jubilee year. This was only the second time in over a century that a design other than the familiar St. George and Dragon reverse has been used on British gold sovereigns. In 2005 and 2012 there were alternate one-off St. George & Dragon designs on the reverse of Elizabeth Sovereigns.

Security

Not all fake sovereigns are created equal. Although the Royal Mint considers counterfeiting and fraud an extremely serious issue, Sovereign-mania particularly in the Middle East and India has bread a new generation of super forgers. Before the 1930s, fake coins contained very little valuable gold, and were consequently underweight, off-colour, of poor quality and not difficult to distinguish from a genuine gold sovereign. Today, millions of standard specifics (22 karat gold, weight) Elizabeth Gold Sovereigns are produced in factories all around the world. These coins are not worthless fakes, but copies produced for markets where original British Sovereigns are difficult to obtain if unavailable. Amazingly, many are alloyed with silver and are thus even more valuable than original Sovereigns. Mintmarks or trademarks indicate the manufacturer.

I realize it is impossible to know what you are going to get when you purchase coins in a year range. Imagine my delight when I received a 2011 coin still sealed in packaging from the Royal Mint. The condition is indisputably excellent. I'm no expert, but the packaging leads me to describe the condition as "mint." CoinInvest's communication is first rate and their delivery is excellent. If I order before 15:00 I have my coins the next day, every time. Service must be stellar to move me to write a review, CoinInvest is.

QUEEN ELIZABETH II GOLD SOVEREIGN | 1957-2021
