2022 Half Sovereign Gold Coin

The 2022 version has been designed to celebrate Elizabeth II’s incredible life and longevity. The new sovereign design coincides with Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee. Elizabeth ascended the throne on 4th February 1952 after the sudden death of her father, King George VI, although Elizabeth's Coronation did not take place until 2nd June 1953.
2022 marks 70 years of Elizabeth's rule. It is a milestone event that no other British monarch has achieved and only Louis XIV outperformed (he stayed 72 years on the throne of France)
For the occasion, the reverse of the coin has had a makeover and a new design. This drawing is the work of Timothy Noad, a renowned numismatic artist. Timothy Noad has worked as a professional calligrapher, illuminator and heraldic artist for over 30 years.The artist has created a beautiful drawing of The Royal Coat of Arms, breaking away from the traditional design of Benedetto Pistrucci’s iconic “George and Dragon”.
The British Royal Coat of Arms is unique to each monarch. It consists of a crest, motto and shield, with two 'supporters' on each side. Queen Elizabeth II's coat of arms features the quartered shield of the United Kingdom, surmounted by a royal crown. The shield dates back to the 1707 Act of Union and symbolises the alliance of the four Great British nations. The shield displays the three passant lions for England, the rampant lion for Scotland, the three lions for Wales and the golden harp for Northern Ireland. The supporters of the shield are a lion and an unicorn.
The obverse of the 2022 half sovereign coin features the fifth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark. Becoming the youngest designer to produce a portrait of the Queen, Clark had only been working as an engraver at The Royal Mint for two years prior to an opportunity to produce the famed effigy. The texts on the obverse reads “ELIZABETH II ∙ DEI ∙ GRA · REGINA ∙ FID ∙ DEF”.
