The Queen's Beasts from the UK Royal Mint

The Royal Mint's Queen's Beasts series is one of its most popular to date. The Black Bull of Clarence is the fifth in the series after the Lion of England and the Griffin of Edward III in 2016 and the Red Dragon of Wales and the Unicorn of Scotland in 2017. The collection is based on the famous golden statues representing the Queen's ancestry and heraldry that stood watch as she was crowned at Westminster Abbey in 1953.

The Black Bull of Clarence

The Black Bull of Clarence came to the monarchy's heraldry through Edward IV who chose it as his coat of arms. The 4th Duke of York and the first Yorkist to become King, Edward was noted for his good looks and his military prowess. His reign was interrupted during the War of the Roses, a brutal and bloody war between the houses of York and Lancaster, when he was usurped for a time by Henry VI. Edward defeated the Lancastrian forces in 1471 and reigned until his death in 1483.
The Black Bull of Clarence was also favoured by his brother, Richard III who took the throne as Lord Protector of the realm in place of Edward's 12-year old son. Richard began his reign in July and by August, Prince Edward and his younger brother Richard had vanished. The Princes in the Tower are widely believed to have been murdered at the request of their uncle - Richard III was therefore last of the Plantagenet line.
