Discover the 1oz Gold Dragon - Queen's Beasts Series

The Queen's Beasts Series is one of the most exciting collections to date issued by the Royal Mint. The 10-coin series will run till 2021, and designs are based on the mythical heraldic creatures of the UK monarchy. The series began in 2016 with the Lion of England. The new 1 oz Gold Queen’s Beast Dragon Coin is the third in the series and the second of two coins issued in 2017 - the first being the Griffin of Edward III.Each coin shows the Red Dragon of Wales as imagined by artist Jody Clark. This magnificent beast was the badge of Owen Tudor and is said to be the dragon that visited the castle of Llewellyn the Last. The Red Dragon is also commonly referred to as the Red Dragon of Cadwaladr after Cadwaladr ap Cadwallon, King of Gwynedd, Wales from 664 to 682 AD. The beast has been a symbol of Wales for centuries and it appears in the tales of Geoffrey of Monmouth. Henry VII took the Dragon as a heraldic symbol to signify his supposed ascent from Cadwaladr - although the tale of his descent is based on tradition rather than historical provenance.

Add the 2017 1oz Dragon to your Queen's Beasts collection

You won't have to prove the provenance of the Queen's Beast Series Gold 1 oz Dragon. Each coin is struck in fine .9999 (24 carat) gold and manufactured to the highest standards. Jody Clark has chosen to show the dragon in three-quarter profile with forked tongue and wings extended and holding the Lion shield that was the coat of arms of Llewellyn Ap Gruffudd - the last native Prince of Wales. Each 2017 1 oz Queen's Beasts Gold Dragon coin also bears the fifth portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark. This makes it one of just a handful of BU coins to have both reverse and obverse designs by the same artist
