One of the most iconic coins, the “Maple Leaf” produced by the Canadian Mint is now online on Coininvest and can be purchased today.
The Canadian Maple Leaf series started in 1979 and went on to be one of the world's most popular gold bullion collections and the best selling coin in the world. It was originally created as a direct competitor to the Krugerrand (which was the only Gold Bullion coin that was freely available). With the boycott of South Africa’s imports because of the Apartheid, the Canadian Gold Leaf Maple coin became highly collectable while the Krugerrand got less available worldwide.
The Canadian Mint originally started out as a branch of the Royal Mint in London but over the years, Canada saw their need for coinage rise and London authorized a branch of the Royal Mint to be built in Ottawa in 1901(inaugurated in 1908). And the rest is history as we say!
The reverse of the coin is an image now famous of the sugar maple leaf, the national emblem of Canada and a perfect metaphor for the great north. Indeed, the maple leaf is resilient, can be found throughout the country and has a diverse range of species. The design created by Walter Ott, is spectacular and the attention to details amazing: the leave’s texture, its unique shape, and its veins are truly remarkable.
The coins of the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Series feature light-refracting radial lines in the background, an element which was added to the coins in 2015. We can also find the privy mark, metal type and weight and purity (written in the two official languages of Canada, English and French)
The obverse depicts a profile of Queen Elizabeth II. Since it was first minted, the only changes to the obverse of the coin have been to the profile of the Queen as she has aged. From 1988 to 1989, the Queen was portrayed as 39 years old; from 1990 until 2004 she was depicted as 64 years old and from 2005 to date she has been portrayed aged 79. The latest design is the work of Susanna Blunt. This is a more relaxed portrait and the Queen is only wearing earrings and a necklace (no crown).
On this side, the words 'ELIZABETH II', the value of the coin and the year it was minted are printed.
In Canada, the Gold Maple Leaf coins are legal tender. This 1/4 oz Coin available here on Coininvest bears a face value of 10 CAD backed by the federal government of Canada.
The coins can be purchased with confidence by investors because the Government of Canada guarantees their weight, purity and Gold content. The security details (radial lines)on both sides prevent counterfeiting and make it appealing to investors and collectors alike. So don’t wait and become the proud owner of the ¼ gold coin Maple Leaf 2022 version!
