Description

The Krugerrand is typified by the image of the leaping Springbok Antelope, the national symbol which is synonymous with South Africa. This treasured national emblem was designed by Coert Steynberg and appears on the reverse of the coin alongside the ¼ FINE GOLD weight and the year the coin was minted.
On the obverse side we find the bust of Paul Kruger, the Boer War President who became an instant hero with the natives after successfully defending the country against the invasion of the British in the first assault on the country. Around the upper edges are the words SUID AFRIKA and SOUTH AFRICA, the name of the country spelled in the two native languages, Afrikaans and English.

History

The Krugerrand is recorded in the annals of history as the first bullion gold to be manufactured for private investors. It therefore changed the shape of the bullion market to make gold coins accessible to everybody as we know today and for this reason is still held with high esteem.
The coin gets its name from Paul Kruger, the President of the old Republic of South Africa who defeated the British in the first Boer War and enjoyed four successful terms in office. The Rand is the official currency of the country, thus Krugerrand was a sensible and appropriate name for a bullion investment coin.

The first coins were struck on 3rd July, 1967 and were made available worldwide in one ounce editions. Although the coin proved to be successful amongst early adopters, many governments banned sales of the coin because of South Africa's apartheid policies.
There were approximately 50,000 one ounce Krugerrands in circulation in that first year and were struck with consistent measure for more than a decade afterwards. At the time the Krugerrand accounted for 90% of the gold bullion market and had very little competition.
That changed in 1979, when the Royal Canadian Mint launched the Maple Leaf which had a higher gold purity, 95% compared to the 91.67% of the Krugerrand.
To counteract the competition, the South African Mint took the decision to offer the coins in fractional measures, first minting the 1/2oz coin and later the 1/4oz coin. The move proved to be decisive and Krugerrands regained their share of the market.
The coins went from strength to strength however following the lifting of apartheid movement in 1994 following the appointment of Nelson Mandela as President. The coins continue to perform strongly in the market today.
