One ounce Krugerrand coins are one the easiest bullion investments to obtain at accessible prices. With a purity of 22 Karat gold and a high liquidity value recognized all around the world, South African Krugerrands are as important today as they were when they changed the mould of private investment coins back in 1967. If you are looking to diversify your investment portfolio with a solid gold investment, the Krugerrand provides you with an excellent opportunity to secure long-term profits.
The Krugerrand coin was the first bullion coin to be made accessible to private investors. It is therefore highly regarded by investors, dealers and collectors around the world and sells for low premiums. This factor also makes the Krugerrand an easy coin to sell when you decide to cash in on your investment. The value of Krugerrands is based purely on gold content and always will be as there is no face value for buyers to offer like with other gold bullion coins – although in reality bullion coins never sell for face value in the current market, because spot prices are far higher. Furthermore Krugerrands have a 91.67% purity and weighs 33.93 grams, therefore are 22-Karat gold so investors can expect to buy and sell the 1oz versions for around the cost of the current spot gold price.
Krugerrands are mostly recognsied for their distinct and unique orange-copper hue together with important symbols that are synonymous with South Africa.
The reverse side of the 2014 gold Kruggerand features the same design as early versions, namely the Springbok Antelope galloping across the savannah – a national symbol associated with South Africa. Also on the reverse side is the date of issue and the declaration that the coin is made from FINE GOLD. At the bottom of the feature image, just underneath the leaf to the right is the initials CLS, represented the renowned South African sculptor, Coert Steynberg who created the Antelope design.
On the obverse of the coin is the bust of Paul Kruger, the 5th and most esteemed President of South Africa who enjoyed four terms in office between 1883 and 1900. The country name is also engraved on this side in both English and Afrikaans, the official languages of South Africa.
The Krugerrand was first introduced by the South African Mint in 1967 with the purpose of plugging a gap in the bullion market. Up until that point there were no investment opportunities in precious metals for private investors. Needless to say the coins became an instant success although sales were curbed by the reluctance of many countries to allow sales within their borders because of South Africa's policy on apartheid. However, because the Krugerrand was relatively unrivalled in gold bullion trade, coin sales dominated 90% of the market. Things were to change however. In 1979, the Royal Canadian Mint introduced the gold Maple Leaf coin – and with a higher gold purity was another pioneering step that changed the shape of the bullion market once more – this time with the South African Mint produced denominations of the 1 oz gold coin and offering 1/2oz and 1/4 oz. Krugerrand continued to perform well despite the competition from other mints and the persistent bans from other countries. The ban was lifted however in 1994, after Nelson Mandela came into power and dissolved apartheid policies. The Krugerrand gradually became available world-wide and has continued to thrive ever since.
