The obverse of the coin, designed by Otto Schultz, features the face of Paul Kruger who was a president of the old South African Republic for four terms. Encircling him are the words ‘South Africa’ in both English and Afrikaans. This is interestingly where the coin gets its name from: the name is a combination of the statesman’s surname (Kruger) and the South African currency (rand). A pearl circle also features around the outside of the obverse side of the coin.
The reverse of the coin features a springbok (Afrikaans for jumping antelope), the national animal of South Africa, and it was designed by Coert Steynberg. The grace and elegance of the animal is evident as it is depicted running through grasslands. The reverse also features the year of minting, 1982, as well as the description of the coin in both Afrikaans and English. A pearl circle features on this side also.
