The design of the 20 Mark coin is unique in that it features the profile of the crown prince, Wilhelm II of Wurttemberg, rather than King Wilhelm I who was ruler of the Prussian Empire at the time the coins were minted. His name is written in German across the top of the coin: KARL KOENING VON WURTTEMBERG.

On the reverse side, is the imperial crown that was designed by Frederic III of Prussia, Wilhelms' brother. It features the spread eagle that has become synonymous with Germany, together with the face value of 20 Marks and the date the coin was issued.

The edge of the 20 Mark coins are engraved with the German words “GOTT MIT UNS” which in English means “God with us.”
