Why buy Free Hanseatic City of Hamburg Gold Coins

Originally manufactured in 1873, City of Hamburg gold coins are closely intertwined with the rich political history of the Prussian Empire. These coins are therefore highly collectible and should not be overlooked by serious coin collectors.

Because of their age and rarity, German marks are not ordinarily the most sought after coins on the bullion market, but when the opportunity arises to obtain one, it is a wise choice to add them to your collection whilst it is possible.

At the time the Free Hanseatic City of Hamburg gold coins were minted, Prussia was the dominant force in Europe and boasted the greatest amount of riches. The 10 mark was the smallest denomination and therefore the most accessible.

Furthermore, the City of Hamburg did not mint as many gold coins as other cities in the province thus are even more rare and difficult to come by. With immense historical and numismatic value, together with a 90% gold fineness, the Free Hanseatic City of Hamburg gold coins present an excellent investment opportunity.

Design of Hanseatic gold coins

Every city in the German Empire had their own coat of arms and the City of Hamburg is typified with by two lions stood upright against a shield with a castle at its centre. On top of the shield is the helmet of a medieval knight topped with six spears and three feathers.

Across the top are the words: FREIE UND HANSESTADT HAMBURG, whilst at the bottom is a solitary “J" representing the mintmark of Hamburg that is still used on modern gold bullion coins today.

On the reverse side is the crowned arms of Germany, the spread eagle with a crown marked by with a Christian Cross in the centre. Inscribed along the top edge are the words DEUTSCHES REICH followed by the year of issue. Along the bottom rim is the face value of 10 MARK.

On the edge of the coins you will find incuse cinquefoils that reads: GOTT MIT UNS, meaning God With Us in English.

History of Hanseatic City of Hamburg Gold Coins

Hamburg was founded in the 9th century by Charles I, the King of the Franks, otherwise known as Charlemagne. The city joined the Hanseatic League in 1241, before being declared a free City in 1510. Although the region came under the governance of the Prussian Empire in 1871, it remained a free state and minted its own gold coins.

Security of King Wilhelm II 20 Mark Gold Coins

It is extremely rare for forges to counterfeit coins as old as the Hanseatic City of Hamburg. The reason for this is because they are not highly sought after and a forgery of this kind would be a waste of time, and the technology used to manufacture these coins in the 19th Century is no longer available. Therefore anybody fool enough to even attempt counterfeiting such historical coins will not be able to get the forgery past experienced dealers like the experts at CoinInvest.
