Gold coins have long been recognized as a vital investment tool, even before the Romans first used the image of Lady Britannia on their coins. The 1/4oz Gold Britannia 2014 is no exception and thanks to a combination of high gold purity, manufacturing excellence and a classical design, gold Britannia coins are highly-regarded and much sought after the world over. The coins therefore represent a solid investment for prices that are accessible to the general public. Gold is typically a long-term investment and buying gold coins in physical form allows you to admire their beauty and numismatic value. The historical significance of Britannia coins adds nostalgic value and the 2014 issue features 99.99% purity.
The quarter ounce Britannia coin features Lady Britannia, the goddess of Ancient Rome standing on a rock clutching a trident in her right hand and holding a shield with the Union Jack blazoned on the front together with an online leaf in her left hand. The imagery is symbolic of the power, strength and prosperity of Britain. Also inscribed on the reverse side is the coin's weight and gold content. The obverse side features Her Majesty the Queen alongside the initials D, G, REG, FID, DEF", which stand for the Latin insignia "Dei gratia regina, fidei defensor " - "By the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith". The face value of 25 pounds is engraved along the bottom edge although the actual value is much more with today's gold spot prices.
Gold Britannia coins were first struck by the Royal Mint in 1987 and have been a stable feature of the global gold bullion market ever since. For 25 years, the coins contained a fineness of 91.7%, or 22 karat gold. Until 1989, the copper was used as a metal alloy, but in 1990 the mint began adding the precious metal silver to increase the value of the coins and improve their minting process. The Royal Mint made further upgrades to the coins by increasing their fineness to 99.99% in order to fall in line with other gold bullion products that were sweeping across the market. Although it was an unprecedented move that drew some criticism from traditionalists, it was necessary in order for the Royal Mint to compete with other bullion coins – prestige was no longer enough for investors to choose Britannia's over the wealth of competition that boasted a higher purity.
Britannia's gold coins are manufactured with precise measurements and use the latest security techniques in order to protect investors from receiving counterfeit merchandise. Both sides of the coin are intricately engraved and struck in a majestically delicate manner that forgers cannot copy without imperfections being detected.
