The Australian Gold Kangaroo series is back and now is your chance to purchase the coin in its smallest denomination, the 1/10 oz version.
The Perth Mint has been manufacturing bullion coins for over 150 years. Established on 20 June 1899, two years before Australia's Federation in 1901, The Perth Mint was the last of three Australian colonial branches of the United Kingdom's Royal Mint (after the now-defunct Sydney Mint and Melbourne Mint) intended to refine gold from the gold rushes and to mint gold sovereigns and half-sovereigns for the British Empire.
The Perth Mint Kangaroo series was first launched in 1986. Initially, the Mint launched a ‘gold nugget’ coin with an image of a nugget. This was to symbolize the rich mining history of Australia. But in 1988, the design changed to portray an image of a Red Kangaroo. It has been featured on the coin since then and every year, we can find a different design.
This 2023 edition is somewhat special and this is why:
The obverse of the coin features Queen Elizabeth II, who sadly passed away in September 2022 shortly after celebrating her Platinum Jubilee (70 years since her accession to the throne). The design has been created by Jody Clark. Clark had only been working as an engraver at The Royal Mint for two years prior to an opportunity to produce the famed effigy. Entering a competition to curate the prominent design on a whim, Clark became the first engraver from The Royal Mint selected to create such portraiture in over 100 years. Here, Her Majesty is wearing her diadem crown and the royal jewels and we can find her name, AUSTRALIA and the legal tender of the coin 15 dollars.
The Perth Mint has decided to pay a special homage to the Queen by adding the years of her reign : 1952-2022. It makes this coin very special.
The reverse of this coin portrays an adult kangaroo looking over its shoulder with a eucalyptus and grass trees in the background. The beautiful design was created by Ing Ing Jong who did also get involved in the Lunar series amongst other beautiful creations. As somebody who loves to draw and create her own characters, one of Ing’s biggest inspirations is Disney and you can see it in the drawing of some of her coins.
Right next to the shrubbery on the coin, the official mint mark of the Perth Mint ("P") can be seen. The legend shows the name of the coin, the year of issue, the fine weight (1/10 ounce) and the fineness (9999 gold).
The Kangaroo coin includes a special security feature: a micro-engraved letter which can be seen only with a microscope or magnifying glass has been added since last year, and this additional security is certainly reassuring for all the investors.
