The American Buffalo is a relatively new coin, which has only been issued since 2006, and in 2016 will only celebrate its tenth anniversary. Nonetheless, the coin has been able to secure a firm place in the market in this short period of time. The coin is different from the other gold bullion coin of the USA, the American Eagle, in various aspects. The Buffalo is minted with a much higher purity of 999.9/1000 rather than 916.7/1000. Furthermore, only gold that was initially processed and dug in the United States of America is used for the Eagle. Gold for the Buffalo coins is not subject to such limitations. The Buffalo, which shows a buffalo on its obverse, is above all a symbol of the originality of the North American prairies. The obverse is a homage to the American aborigines, of which numerous tribes worshipped the buffalo as a holy animal.
