Face Value

Face Value is the value that is shown on a coin or banknote. In the case of gold, silver, platinum and palladium coins, the face value is normally far lower than the true value of the item. 

Many legal tender collector's coins are minted with a nominal value that makes them legal tender in their country of issue. 

For example, a 1oz Gold Britannia has a face value of £100 but its true worth is based on its precious metal content and calculated according to the current spot price
