1/10 oz Vienna Philharmonic Gold Coin (2021)

The Vienna Philharmonic gold coin was first minted in 1989. It was that year a change in Austrian law permitted the issue of gold coins for investment purposes. Naturally a lot of discussion followed regarding what motif to use on the coin. The Vienna Philharmonic orchestra is one of the world’s most famous and is notorious for having produced some of the world’s finest composers, and for these reasons the orchestra was chosen to be the motif on the coin and the symbol that represents Austria.

Designed by Thomas Pesendorfer, the Austrian Mints head coin engraver, the obverse side of the coin features the Great Organ of the Musikverein Concert Hall in Vienna. The top of the coin is inscribed “Republik Österreich” and the bottom half with the weight, purity, year of issue and monetary value.

The reverse of the coin displays eight of the instruments featured in the Vienna Philharmonic orchestra. Since the coins inception it has gone on to sell millions every year. It is extremely popular with investors and collectors.
