In 2021, to mark the 35th anniversary of the American Eagle program, the US Mint announced a change in the design of the reverse. The original design depicted a family of Bald Eagles and had been created by Miley Busiek.

The reverse:
As mentioned, the reverse of American Eagle Gold Proof Coins has a new design portrayal of an eagle, created by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program Designer Jennie Norris and sculpted by United States Mint Medallic Artist Renata Gordon.
This depiction of the Eagle captures its beauty and force with a particular attention to details: the individual feathers on its head are clearly visible, and the beak used to capture the prey is along with the powerful hook in its beak that it uses to capture its prey.
The Eagle itself is the national animal of America and is a strong patriotic symbol that represents strength, courage, freedom, and immortality. Norris explains that her design captures ‘the intensity of the eagle’s stare through the close cropping’ and remarks that its gaze speaks of pride and wisdom passed down through generations of time’. Her initials ‘JN’ can be seen on the coin just beneath the eagle, as well as the initials of the coin’s sculptor, US Mint medallic artist Renata Gordon (RG), which feature above the Eagle on the right.
Inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST,” along with the face value of 5 dollars and weight.
The obverse:
The coins’ obverse features Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ full-length figure of Liberty with flowing hair, holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. Lady Liberty has the word “LIBERTY” arched above her as she walks forward. To render a closer reflection of Saint-Gaudens’ original vision, legacy details of the obverse design also were restored in 2021, including modifications to the U.S. Capitol Building, stars, torch, sun rays, and other design elements based on the original bronze cast. The year of mintage appears aside.
Security features
The 2021 1/10 oz American Gold Eagles have an improved anti-counterfeiting mechanism. The edges contain a reeded variation. It is a small chip of a plain, smooth surface randomly inserted in the reeds.
