About the Full Sovereign Elisabeth Gold Coin

By StoneX Bullion

Particularities of the Full Sovereign Elisabeth

The full Sovereign Elisabeth is bullion gold coin with a prolonged tradition being issued by the Royal Mint beginning with 1957. The mintage of these sovereigns continues in our present days. Queen Elisabeth II is one of the two British Queens that had its portrait illustrated on sovereigns, the other distinction of this kind belonging to Queen Victoria. The full Sovereign Elisabeth was issued from 1957 until 1968 with the exception of the 1960 and 1961 years. The mintage was restarted in 1974 and the sovereign has continued being issued every year from that on.

The characteristics of this sovereign illustrating Queen Elisabeth II have remained unchanged. They are also the characteristics of these worldwide known bullion gold coins. The full Sovereign Elisabeth has a fineness of 22 karat gold. The 11 parts of gold are alloyed with 1 part copper, meaning approximately 916.7% fine gold the rest of the composition being covered by copper. This legendary alloyed is also known as Crown Gold.

Another characteristic of the full Sovereign Elisabeth is its standard weight of 7.98g out which 7.32g weighs the pure gold used in manufacturing the sovereigns. The weight of pure gold is equivalent with 0.2354 troy ounces or one quarter of an ounce of pure gold. Concerning the dimensions, the Sovereign Elisabeth has 22.05mm diameter.

Full Sovereign Elisabeth Design

The obverse of the full Sovereign Elisabeth illustrates the portrait of the Queen facing to the right. Is a delicate reproduction of the contemporary British monarch, illustrating an uncrowned Queen and is also one of the coin illustrations most preferred by numismatists. On the obverse it is also written ELIZABETH II DEI GRA REGINA FID DEF. It is translated to Elizabeth II, By the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of Faith.

The reverse of this much appreciated sovereign has the classic mythical slaying of the dragon by St. George. The ubiquitous St George continued to be the preferred illustration for the reverse. The reverse also shows at the bottom the year in which the die was made and not the mintage date.

So there are two mythical reproductions on full Sovereign Elisabeth: a Queen with a long lasting reign and a fighter defeating a mythical creature. These sovereigns are also coins produced using high definition and detail.

Acquiring Full Sovereign Elisabeth

The full Sovereign Elisabeth has begun being produced by the Royal Mint as a response to the high demand that was combined with counterfeiting. These were the two acute pressures that determined the regular mintage of the sovereigns facing the present Queen. The sovereigns were intended to satisfy the demand and at the same time diminish the premium that was tempting so many people to counterfeit these bullion gold coins. In order to combat counterfeiting, the coins had a finer grade milled edge.

The full Sovereign Elisabeth is full of history and therefore a much preferred gold coin for collectors and is available in Brilliant Uncirculated condition.
